Student and parental planning for education
has become increasingly more complex as the skills and training
needed to qualify for a well paying job or productive career
has grown. At one time a high school education was considered
a basic necessity for entering the job market. Today, due to
the increased demand and competition for qualified individuals,
a college education or technical training beyond the traditional
high school program is becoming the recommended minimum for
a career.
Several years ago, Oley Valley High School eliminated the general
curriculum and upgraded the skills and knowledge level of the courses by introducing
the Tech Prep curriculum. Today, the applied technical curriculum is referred
to as the Technical Academic (TA) program to reflect the increased demands and
emphasis on the academic and technical skills embedded in the curriculum that
will lead to career placement in many technical fields. A Technical Academic
education typically leads to a career that requires additional training 1, 2,
or 3 years beyond high school at a technical school, business school, college
or other institution for further education.
The College Preparatory program is a traditional academic program
of studies that leads into a continued educational program at a four year college
or university, and a career that requires a four or more year sequence of courses
and degrees needed for gaining entry into a professional field.
In an effort to help students and parents make decisions about
their educational future, Oley Valley has developed occupational Career Clusters
of related areas of study. The five career clusters for students to choose from
are listed below:
